How to Install Vanity Lighting and Outlets

Vanity lighting is the primary engine of a functional bathroom. Proper task lighting eliminates shadows under the eyes and chin, making shaving or applying makeup far easier, while an accessible outlet keeps your countertop clear of dangling cords. Doing this right requires precision and a strict adherence to electrical safety standards to ensure the damp environment of a bathroom remains perfectly safe. Installing these components correctly means going inside the wall. You will need to carefully measure your vanity height and mirror placement to ensure the lights hit where you need them and the outlet sits exactly where your appliances actually reach. When finished, you should have a bright, clean lighting scheme that integrates seamlessly with your daily routine.

  1. Mark and Cut Precisely. Mark the exact locations for your vanity light box and the recessed outlet box based on the manufacturer's templates. Use a drywall saw to cut the openings, being extremely careful to avoid cutting into wall studs or hidden plumbing lines.
  2. Route Power Through Walls. Fish 14/2 or 12/2 NM-B wire from your power source—typically an existing light switch or junction box—to your new openings. Use a fish tape to navigate through the wall cavity, ensuring the cable is secured with cable staples if you are working in an open wall or behind access panels.
  3. Seat Boxes Flush. Insert 'old-work' or remodel electrical boxes into the wall openings. Tighten the mounting wings until the box is pulled firmly and flush against the surface of the drywall.
  4. Wire by Code and Test. Connect your supply wires to a GFCI-rated outlet, attaching black to brass, white to silver, and green or bare copper to the green ground screw. Fold the wires neatly and screw the outlet into the box, then attach the cover plate.
  5. Secure Fixture to Box. Attach the light fixture's mounting plate to the electrical box, then wire the fixture's leads to the wall supply using wire nuts. Secure the fixture base to the mounting plate per the manufacturer's instructions.
  6. Seal Moisture Out. Apply a thin bead of silicone caulk around the vanity light backplate where it meets the wall if the fixture does not come with a factory gasket. This prevents moisture from the bathroom air from entering the wall cavity.
