How to Install a Frameless Shower Door

Precision is the heartbeat of a successful frameless shower installation. Unlike traditional framed doors that offer a margin of error through metal channels, frameless glass relies entirely on the structural integrity of your wall studs and the perfect alignment of heavy-duty hardware. When done well, the door swings silently, closes against a clear seal, and lacks any distracting metal borders. Take your time with the measurements. Glass cannot be cut or trimmed once it leaves the factory, so if your walls are even slightly out of plumb, you must account for that before drilling. This project demands patience and a reliable helper, as tempered glass panels are heavy and unforgiving if dropped against tile or stone.

1. Verify Walls Are Plumb. Use a long level to check the vertical plumb of your walls and the horizontal level of your curb. Mark where your studs are located behind the tile so you know where you can safely drill.
2. Secure Wall Clamps. Position the wall clamps according to the manufacturer's template. Drill through the tile using a diamond-tipped bit, then secure the clamps into the studs using stainless steel screws.
3. Position Fixed Panel. Place the fixed glass panel into the bottom U-channel or wall clamps. Use setting blocks under the glass to distribute weight and ensure the panel is perfectly level before tightening the hardware.
4. Install Hinges Correctly. Attach the hinges to the fixed panel or the wall as dictated by your specific model. Ensure the gaskets are placed correctly between the metal hinge and the glass surface.
5. Hang and Align Door. Lift the door panel into the hinges with the help of a partner. Adjust the hinge alignment until the door swings freely without binding and maintains an even gap along the strike side.
6. Seal All Glass Edges. Apply a bead of 100% silicone sealant along the outside edges where the glass meets the wall and floor. Use a smoothing tool for a clean, professional finish.
