How to Install a Wall-Mounted Toilet
Installing a wall-mounted toilet requires mounting a carrier system inside the wall frame, connecting water and waste lines, then hanging the toilet bowl on the finished wall.
- Locate and Measure Your Wall. Mark the toilet location on your wall, ensuring it's centered between studs with at least 15 inches clearance on each side. The standard height is 15-17 inches from floor to toilet rim. Check local codes for specific requirements and verify there's adequate space behind the wall for the carrier system.
- Anchor the Carrier Frame. Mount the carrier frame to the wall studs using heavy-duty bolts. The carrier holds the toilet weight and houses the tank mechanism. Position it so the mounting bolts will be at the correct height for your toilet model. Most carriers adjust between 15-23 inches high.
- Connect the Water Supply. Connect a water supply line to the carrier's inlet valve. Use a dedicated shutoff valve and run the line from your main water supply. Test the connection for leaks before proceeding. The supply line should be sized according to manufacturer specifications, typically half-inch.
- Route the Drain Connection. Attach the waste outlet from the carrier to your main drain line. Use proper fittings and ensure the connection slopes downward at the correct grade. Apply pipe joint compound or use rubber gaskets as specified. This connection must be watertight and properly vented.
- Drywall and Finish the Wall. Build framing around the carrier if needed, then install drywall or tile backer board. Leave access to the flush plate area and any service panels. The finished wall surface should be flush with the carrier's mounting plane. Allow proper curing time for tile adhesive or joint compound.
- Mount the Flush Plate. Cut an opening for the flush plate according to manufacturer templates. Install the pneumatic or electronic flush mechanism, connecting it to the carrier's flush valve. Test the flush operation before final wall finishing. Ensure the plate sits flush with your wall surface.
- Hang the Toilet Bowl. Slide the toilet bowl onto the mounting bolts protruding from the wall. Install the rubber gasket between the bowl and carrier outlet, then tighten the mounting nuts evenly. Don't overtighten as this can crack the porcelain. The bowl should sit level and secure against the wall.
- Fill, Flush, and Verify. Turn on the water supply and test the flush mechanism several times. Check all connections for leaks, particularly around the waste connection and mounting points. Adjust the flush volume if your system has this feature. Install the toilet seat according to manufacturer instructions.
