How to Install a Water Softener

Water softeners solve one of the most persistent problems in hard-water homes: scale buildup on fixtures, dingy laundry, and that sticky soap residue on your skin. Installing one yourself saves the $500 to $1,500 you'd pay a plumber and gives you direct control over the system from day one. The work is straightforward—you're essentially splicing the softener into your incoming water line, running a drain line to a floor drain or sump, and setting the salt. Done right, a softener runs quietly in the background for years, regenerating itself at night when you're asleep.

  1. Map Your Water Entry Point. Find where water enters your house—typically near the water meter in a basement, crawl space, or utility room. This is where you'll install the softener. Choose a spot within a few feet of the incoming line that has access to a floor drain or where you can run a small drain line. Trace the water line to identify the best cut point, ideally before any water heater or major branches.
  2. Cut Supply Line Clean. Turn the main shut-off valve clockwise until tight. Open a faucet upstairs to release pressure and let the line drain. Using a hacksaw or pipe cutter, make a clean, straight cut in the water supply line at your chosen installation point. Dry the cut ends with a cloth—any moisture interferes with fitting connections.
  3. Seal All Threaded Ports. Check your softener manual for port size and type—usually half-inch NPT threads. Wrap the threads with plumber's tape (wrap clockwise, 4-5 layers) and hand-tighten the inlet port. Then hand-tighten the outlet port. Do not over-torque; these ports don't need a wrench if the tape is applied correctly.
  4. Connect Inlet Line First. Measure from the cut point to the inlet port and cut a short length of water line or flexible hose rated for drinking water (NSF certified). If using rigid copper or PEX, use crimp fittings or compression fittings at both ends. If using flexible hose, use hose barb fittings or compression fittings. Tighten compression fittings snug with a wrench—one full turn past hand-tight.
  5. Route Drain Away Safe. Connect the outlet port to the second cut end of your water line using the same method as the inlet. For the drain line, attach flexible polyethylene tubing to the drain outlet on the softener (usually a half-inch or three-quarter-inch port). Run this drain line to a nearby floor drain, laundry sink, or sump pit—it should drain freely without backpressure. Secure the drain line with a clip or tie to prevent sagging or kinking.
  6. Load Salt and Prime Tank. Locate the salt storage tank (usually a separate vessel attached to or standing beside the softener). Remove the cover and pour bag salt (either rock salt or pellets, depending on your system) until the tank is about three-quarters full. Check your manual for the recommended salt type—some systems use only pellets to avoid sediment. Add water from a garden hose until the water level reaches the fill line indicated on the tank.
  7. Pressurize and Hunt Leaks. Open the main shut-off valve gradually (counterclockwise), watching all connection points for drips. Let water run for two to three minutes at a faucet upstairs to purge air from the lines. Check the inlet and outlet fittings, drain line connection, and any joints you made. Wipe away water with a cloth so you can spot new leaks clearly. If you spot a drip at a compression fitting, tighten it another quarter turn with a wrench.
  8. Program and Test First Cycle. Review the manual for your softener model—most have a digital controller on the tank itself. Set the hardness level (your water utility or a test kit will tell you this; typical hard water is 10–15 grains per gallon), the days between regeneration (usually 3–7 days depending on household size), and the time for regeneration (typically 2 a.m. to avoid daytime disruption). Run a manual regeneration cycle according to the manual to prime the resin and test all functions. The system should cycle quietly with water flowing to the drain.
