How to Install a Bathroom Vanity Light

Luminaires serve as the focal point of any bathroom renovation, dictating the mood and functionality of your morning routine. An outdated or poorly placed vanity light can cast harsh, unflattering shadows, while a well-installed fixture provides crisp, even illumination that elevates the entire space. The process is straightforward, but it demands absolute attention to electrical safety and a steady hand to ensure the fixture sits perfectly flush against the wall. Getting this done well means more than just tightening a few screws; it is about creating a moisture-resistant seal that protects your internal wiring from the humid bathroom environment. You are looking for a result that feels seamless, where the hardware disappears and only the light remains. Whether you are swapping out a builder-grade bar for a modern sconce or upgrading to LEDs, the steps below ensure a code-compliant, professional-grade finish.

  1. Kill the Power First. Locate your home's main service panel and flip the circuit breaker labeled for the bathroom or lighting. Verify the power is off by using a non-contact voltage tester on the existing fixture wires before touching anything.
  2. Disconnect the Old Fixture. Unscrew the decorative nuts or screws holding the current vanity light to the wall mounting bracket. Carefully pull the fixture away from the wall and disconnect the wire nuts, keeping the light supported as you work.
  3. Mount Bracket Level. Attach the new mounting plate provided with your light fixture to the junction box using the provided machine screws. Ensure the plate is level, as any tilt here will be amplified once the fixture is fully attached.
  4. Join Wires Securely. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the supply wires if they appear frayed or corroded. Connect the copper (or green) grounding wire to the ground screw on the bracket, then join the white (neutral) and black (hot) wires to their corresponding fixture wires using wire nuts.
  5. Secure Housing Flush. Tuck the wires neatly back into the junction box, ensuring no strands are pinched between the fixture base and the wall. Position the vanity light over the mounting studs or plate and secure it with the provided hardware.
  6. Seal and Power Up. Apply a thin bead of silicone caulk around the top and sides of the fixture base where it meets the wall, leaving the bottom edge open for drainage. Install the light bulbs and decorative glass shades, then turn the power back on at the breaker.
