How to Install a Bathroom Vanity Light
Vanity lighting is the most impactful way to modernize a bathroom without tackling a full renovation. A well-placed fixture provides balanced, shadow-free illumination for grooming, while an outdated one can make a clean space feel neglected. Getting this right is about precision with your electrical connections and ensuring the base plate covers the previous fixture's footprint. When done well, the light sits perfectly level, hides the wall imperfections behind it, and functions seamlessly with your existing switch.
- Kill the Power First. Locate your home's main service panel and flip the circuit breaker labeled for the bathroom lights to the off position. Verify the power is off by flipping the vanity light switch and using a non-contact voltage tester on the fixture wires.
- Carefully Disconnect the Old Fixture. Unscrew the decorative nuts or screws holding the current light to the wall and pull it away carefully to expose the wiring. Use your voltage tester one last time inside the box to confirm zero power before disconnecting the wire nuts.
- Secure the Mounting Bracket. Attach the new mounting plate provided with your light fixture to the junction box using the included machine screws. Ensure it is perfectly level before tightening the screws firmly.
- Match Wires Perfectly. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the house wires if necessary. Connect the ground wire (green or bare copper) to the green screw on the bracket, then match the white (neutral) wire and black (hot) wire to the fixture's corresponding leads using wire nuts.
- Lock in the Fixture. Tuck the wires carefully back into the junction box, ensuring they are not pinched. Align the fixture base with the mounting bracket screws and lock it into place with the provided decorative nuts.
- Test and Verify. Install the specified light bulbs, turn the breaker back on, and toggle the wall switch. Check for any buzzing or flickering to confirm a successful installation.
