How to Install a Bathroom Vanity Light

Lighting defines the utility of your bathroom, and upgrading a dated vanity fixture is one of the highest-impact changes you can make. A well-installed light not only clears the shadows from your morning routine but also refreshes the look of the entire space. It is a straightforward electrical task that hinges on securing a solid base to the junction box and ensuring every wire is seated firmly. Done well, your vanity light will sit flush against the wall with no flickering or gaps. The process requires a steady hand and a clear head for safety. By following the standard color-coding protocols and testing your connections before tightening the final screws, you ensure a safe, reliable result that passes the eye test every time.

  1. Kill the Power First. Locate your home's circuit breaker panel and flip the switch corresponding to the bathroom lighting. Verify the power is off by flicking the light switch; if the vanity light doesn't turn on, you are clear to proceed.
  2. Strip Away the Old. Unscrew the cap nuts or decorative bolts holding the old fixture to the wall. Gently pull the fixture away from the electrical box and disconnect the wire nuts, keeping track of which wires were connected to which.
  3. Set a Level Base. Attach the universal mounting plate provided with your new fixture to the existing junction box using the provided machine screws. Ensure the plate is level before tightening the screws firmly.
  4. Match Colors, Secure Tight. Match the black (hot) fixture wire to the black house wire, the white (neutral) fixture wire to the white house wire, and the bare copper (ground) wire to the green grounding screw or house ground wire. Secure each connection using wire nuts, ensuring no bare wire is visible outside the connector.
  5. Secure the Canopy Flush. Gently push the wires back into the junction box, being careful not to pinch them against the wall. Align the fixture base with the mounting plate screws and tighten the cap nuts until the light is secure against the wall.
  6. Test and Finish. Install the glass shades if applicable, insert the recommended light bulbs, and flip the breaker back on. Test the switch to confirm the fixture illuminates properly.
