How to Install Floating Shelves in a Bathroom
Floating shelves are the ultimate solution for small bathrooms where traditional cabinets feel heavy and restrictive. By eliminating visible supports, you create clean, open lines that make the room feel larger while gaining vital storage for towels, soaps, and glass jars. The trick is acknowledging that bathroom walls are often tiled and frequently exposed to moisture. Done well, a floating shelf feels as solid as the wall itself. The key is finding your studs before you drill and sealing every point of contact against moisture intrusion. This project turns dead wall space into functional design, provided you take the time to map your layout and protect the interior of your wall from dampness.
- Find Your Studs First. Use a stud finder to identify the centers of your wall studs in the desired location. Use a level to draw a light pencil line where the bottom or top of your shelf will sit, marking the stud locations clearly across that line.
- Visualize the Layout. Hold your bracket against the wall, aligning the mounting holes with your marked stud centers. Check the level once more to ensure the bracket is perfectly horizontal, as any deviation will be obvious once the shelf is mounted.
- Drill with Precision. Drill pilot holes into the studs using a bit slightly smaller than the shank of your lag screws. If your wall is tiled, apply a piece of painter's tape over the drill site to prevent the bit from walking.
- Seal, Then Secure. Apply a small dab of clear silicone caulk into each pilot hole to keep moisture out of the wall cavity. Drive the lag screws through the bracket and into the studs until the bracket is flush and rigid.
- Mount the Shelf. Slide the floating shelf onto the bracket rods. If the fit is tight, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the shelf toward the wall until it meets the surface flush.
- Seal Against Moisture. Run a thin, neat bead of silicone caulk along the seam where the shelf meets the wall. Use a damp finger to smooth it out, creating a water-resistant seal.
