How to Install Floating Shelves in a Bathroom

Floating shelves are the ultimate upgrade for a cramped bathroom, providing essential storage without the bulk of a cabinet. By eliminating visible supports, you create a clean, modern look that makes small spaces feel significantly more open. Success here depends entirely on how you anchor the brackets to the wall. Because bathrooms see frequent fluctuations in moisture and temperature, using the right fasteners and sealing the entry points is vital to prevent wall damage and keep your shelves from sagging over time.

1. Find the studs first. Use a high-quality stud finder to identify the vertical framing members behind your drywall. Mark the exact center of each stud with a pencil to ensure your brackets are anchored into solid wood.
2. Mark your height line. Hold your bracket template or the mounting bar against the wall at your desired height. Use a spirit level to draw a perfectly horizontal line across your stud marks.
3. Drill pilot holes carefully. Drill pilot holes into the marked studs using a bit slightly smaller than your mounting screws. This prevents the wood studs from splitting when you drive the heavy-duty lag screws in.
4. Waterproof before anchoring. Apply a small bead of clear silicone caulk into the drilled pilot holes before inserting the screws. This creates a moisture barrier that stops water from seeping into the drywall behind your shelf.
5. Screw brackets flush tight. Drive the mounting screws through the bracket holes and into the studs. Check the level one last time as you tighten the final screw to ensure no shifting occurred during the process.
6. Lock shelf to brackets. Slide the shelf onto the bracket arms until it sits flush against the wall. Tighten any set screws located underneath the shelf to lock it onto the mounting bars.
