How to Install a Towel Rack into Tiled Bathroom Walls

Towel racks are the unsung heroes of the bathroom, but drilling into ceramic or porcelain tile is a task that intimidates most homeowners. One wrong slip with a masonry bit can lead to a spiderweb crack that ruins an entire wall of tile. Done well, your hardware will sit flush and hold firm for decades without ever loosening or pulling out of the wall. The secret lies in patience and the right choice of drill bit. You are not pushing the drill through the wall; you are letting the diamond grit grind away the surface of the tile. Keep the speed low, keep the bit cool, and never use the hammer function on your drill, as the vibration will shatter your tile instantly.

  1. Mark holes with precision. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall and use a level to ensure it is straight. Mark the screw holes clearly on the tile using a non-permanent marker or a small piece of masking tape to prevent the drill bit from wandering.
  2. Choose the right bit. Insert a carbide-tipped or diamond-tipped tile drill bit into your drill. Ensure your drill is set to the 'drill' setting and not 'hammer' mode, as hammer action will break the tile.
  3. Keep the bit cool always. Apply steady, light pressure and begin drilling slowly to create a starter divot. Once you have a mark, maintain a slow speed and keep the bit cool by occasionally spraying it with a mist of water.
  4. Clear dust from holes. Use a vacuum to clear all ceramic dust from the hole. Once you hit the wall cavity behind the tile, stop drilling immediately.
  5. Seat anchors flush. Push your wall anchors into the holes until they are flush with the surface of the tile. If they are tight, use a rubber mallet to gently tap them into place.
  6. Secure without over-torquing. Align the mounting brackets over the anchors and drive the screws in until tight. Do not overtighten, or you risk cracking the tile around the hole.
  7. Lock the rack tight. Slide the towel rack bar onto the brackets and tighten the set screws located on the bottom of the hardware. Check that the bar is secure and does not wiggle.
