How to Install a Slide-Out Drawer in Your Bathroom Vanity

Installing a slide-out drawer solves the frustration of fishing for items in the back of the cabinet by bringing everything out into the light. A well-installed drawer moves effortlessly, feels solid under weight, and utilizes every inch of vertical space beneath your sink plumbing. Getting this right requires patience with measurements, as most vanity cabinets are not perfectly square. Focus on the clearance around your P-trap and supply lines before you commit to hardware placement. If the drawer glides smoothly on the first try without binding, you have successfully tamed the vanity clutter.

  1. Map the pipes first. Empty the vanity and identify the exact path of the drain pipes and supply lines. Measure the width of the cabinet opening and subtract the required clearance for the drawer slides, usually 1/2 inch on each side.
  2. Mount cabinet slides level. Mark the height for your drawer slides using a level. Attach the cabinet members of the drawer slides to the inside walls of the vanity using the manufacturer-provided screws, ensuring they are perfectly parallel.
  3. Build a square box. Assemble the drawer box sides, front, and back according to your kit's instructions. Use wood glue and the provided fasteners to ensure the box is square and rigid.
  4. Secure drawer slides flush. Align the drawer members of the slides to the bottom edge of the drawer box sides. Secure them with screws, ensuring the hardware sits flush against the wood surface.
  5. Test the glide action. Angle the drawer into the cabinet, aligning the slides on the box with those inside the vanity. Gently push the drawer in until it clicks into place and test the full extension.
  6. Fine-tune and lubricate. Use the adjustment screws on the slide mechanism to shift the drawer slightly left, right, or vertically to achieve an even gap around the drawer face. Tighten all fasteners once the drawer operates silently.
