How to Install New Bathroom Vanity Lights
Lighting defines the mood of a bathroom more than any other fixture. A flickering or dated vanity light can make a clean space feel neglected, but a fresh, well-placed fixture transforms the room instantly. Swapping a light is one of the most rewarding electrical upgrades you can tackle, provided you respect the current and follow a systematic approach. Success here is all about the mechanical connection to the wall and the integrity of your wire nuts. You are not just hanging a piece of glass and metal; you are securing an electrical circuit. When done well, the fixture sits perfectly flush against the drywall with no wobbling, and the illumination highlights your space without casting harsh, unwanted shadows.
- Kill the Power First. Go to your main electrical panel and switch off the breaker controlling the bathroom lights. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the fixture base to confirm there is absolutely no power flowing before you touch any wires.
- Disconnect the Old Fixture. Unscrew the decorative nuts or mounting screws holding the fixture base to the wall. Carefully pull the fixture away from the junction box to expose the wire connections, then untwist the wire nuts to disconnect the supply wires.
- Stabilize the Junction Box. Ensure your electrical junction box is firmly secured to a wall stud. If the box is loose or damaged, reinforce it now, as the new light must have a stable mounting surface.
- Mount the Bracket Level. Attach the new mounting plate provided with your light kit to the junction box using the supplied machine screws. Make sure the plate is level; a crooked base is impossible to hide once the glass is attached.
- Secure All Connections. Match the black (hot) wire to black, white (neutral) to white, and green or bare copper (ground) to the ground screw on the mounting bracket. Use wire nuts to secure the connections, wrapping them with electrical tape for extra security.
- Finalize and Light Up. Tuck the wires carefully into the junction box and secure the fixture base onto the mounting bracket. Once stable, install the bulbs and attach any glass shades or trim pieces.
