How to Install a Walk-In Shower

Waterproofing is the silent foundation of a successful shower installation. When you trade a traditional tub for a walk-in shower, you are essentially building a wet room within your bathroom that must manage water flow, gravity, and vapor transmission with absolute precision. Done well, a walk-in shower feels spacious, modern, and effortless to maintain. Done poorly, it invites water intrusion behind your walls, leading to rot and structural failure. Focus your energy on the pan installation and the membrane sealing; these are the only parts of the job that actually prevent a total bathroom renovation in five years.

  1. Strip to the Studs. Remove the existing tub, wall tiles, and backing material down to the studs. Inspect the subfloor for water damage, replacing any soft or rotted wood before you proceed with the new footprint.
  2. Route Water Right. Relocate the drain to the center or specific location required by your new shower pan. Install the new shower valve and route the hot and cold lines to your desired fixture height, ensuring the valve is set to the correct depth for your final tile finish.
  3. Set the Pan Solid. Install the pre-sloped shower pan according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring it is level across all edges. Use thinset mortar underneath the pan to prevent any hollow spots or 'bounce' when you step inside.
  4. Armor the Walls. Install cement board or waterproof foam board directly to the wall studs. Leave a 1/8-inch gap between the boards and the shower pan, then fill that gap with a flexible, waterproof sealant.
  5. Seal Every Seam Twice. Apply a liquid-applied waterproof membrane or a fabric-based sheet membrane over all wall joints, corners, and the interface between the floor and walls. Coat the entire shower area at least twice to ensure a monolithic seal.
  6. Finish with Precision. Apply thinset mortar and set your tiles starting from the center of the wall and working outward. Use plastic spacers to maintain consistent grout lines, and finish with a high-quality, mold-resistant grout.
