How to Install a Wall-Mounted Vanity

Vanities mounted to the wall create an illusion of space and make floor cleaning effortless, but they rely entirely on the integrity of your wall structure. Unlike floor-standing units that carry their weight on their feet, a wall-mounted piece is essentially a cantilevered shelf that must support the weight of the cabinet, the sink, and the water inside the basin. Success here depends on finding the studs and ensuring the unit is perfectly level before the plumbing connections are made. If your wall studs don't align with the vanity's mounting holes, do not rely on drywall anchors; you must open the wall and install horizontal 2x6 blocking between the studs to provide a rock-solid anchor point.

  1. Locate studs, mark the line.. Measure the height for your vanity and draw a level horizontal line on the wall to represent the top of the unit. Use a stud finder to locate all studs within the vanity width and mark their centers clearly with a pencil.
  2. Build solid backing first.. If studs don't align with the vanity's mounting points, cut a section of drywall out to expose the studs. Install horizontal 2x6 wood blocking between them, ensuring the blocks are flush with the front of the studs, then patch and paint the wall.
  3. Cut plumbing access holes.. Measure the distance from the floor to your drain and water supply lines on the wall. Transfer these measurements to the back of the vanity cabinet and use a hole saw to cut appropriately sized openings for the plumbing pipes.
  4. Screw it down level.. Position the vanity against the wall, aligning it with your level line. Drill pilot holes through the vanity's mounting rail into the studs or the installed blocking, then drive heavy-duty lag screws with washers to secure the cabinet.
  5. Seal and seat the sink.. Apply a thin bead of high-quality silicone sealant along the top edges of the cabinet. Carefully place the sink or countertop onto the cabinet and press down firmly to create a watertight seal.
  6. Connect supply and drain.. Install the faucet and drain assembly to the sink before finalizing the wall connections. Connect the P-trap to the drain tailpiece and attach the flexible supply lines to the shut-off valves, tightening all connections with a wrench.
