How to Install a High-Pressure Shower Head

PRESSURE is the secret to a great shower, but most stock shower heads restrict flow more than they need to. If your morning routine feels like standing under a gentle mist rather than a refreshing stream, the issue is likely a combination of a low-flow restrictor inside your existing head and simple mineral buildup over time. Upgrading to a high-pressure shower head is one of the most rewarding afternoon projects you can undertake. It requires no specialized plumbing skills and delivers an immediate improvement to your daily comfort. When done well, you will have a rock-solid, leak-free connection that provides a consistent, invigorating spray every single time you turn the handle.

  1. Detach the Old Head. Grip the shower arm firmly with one pair of pliers to prevent it from twisting inside the wall. Use an adjustable wrench to turn the shower head nut counter-clockwise until it detaches from the arm.
  2. Clear the Threads Clean. Use a stiff wire brush or a damp cloth to remove old tape, mineral deposits, or corrosion from the exposed threads of the shower arm. Ensure the surface is smooth and clean to guarantee a proper seal for the new hardware.
  3. Seal the Threads First. Wrap plumber's tape (PTFE tape) around the threads of the shower arm in a clockwise direction. Apply three to four full wraps, ensuring the tape stays tight to the threads without bunching up.
  4. Thread On the New Head. Thread the new shower head onto the arm by hand, turning it clockwise until it is snug. Avoid using tools for the final tightening to prevent over-tightening and cracking the plastic or metal fittings.
  5. Verify No Leaks Exist. Turn on the water at the shower handle and check the connection point for any dripping or spraying. If you notice a leak, turn the water off and tighten the connection slightly more by hand.
  6. Perfect Your Spray Pattern. Set the spray pattern to your preferred mode and enjoy the improved flow. Ensure the swivel ball joint is adjusted so the spray hits the center of the shower floor.
