How to install a ceiling fan

Installing a ceiling fan requires turning off power at the breaker, mounting a proper electrical box, connecting the wiring according to manufacturer instructions, and securing the fan assembly. This work requires electrical permits and professional installation is strongly recommended.

  1. Turn off power and verify electrical box. Shut off power at the circuit breaker and use a voltage tester to confirm no electricity flows to the ceiling fixture. Remove the existing light fixture and examine the electrical box. Ceiling fans require a heavy-duty electrical box rated for at least 50 pounds, mounted directly to a ceiling joist or fan-rated brace. Standard light fixture boxes will not support a ceiling fan safely.
  2. Install proper mounting hardware. If your existing box is not fan-rated, install a new one. For new construction or accessible joists, mount a fan-rated electrical box directly to the ceiling joist with appropriate screws. For finished ceilings, use an expandable fan brace that fits between joists and supports the electrical box. Thread the house wiring through the box before securing it in place.
  3. Assemble the fan motor and mounting bracket. Follow manufacturer instructions to attach the mounting bracket to the electrical box using the provided screws. Assemble the fan motor housing and attach the downrod if your model uses one. Some flush-mount fans skip this step. Thread the fan wires through the downrod and connect the motor to the mounting bracket temporarily.
  4. Connect the electrical wiring. Match the fan wires to house wires using wire nuts: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), green or bare to the ground wire. If you have a light kit, you may have an additional blue wire that connects to a separate wall switch. Carefully tuck all connections into the electrical box and secure the fan to the mounting bracket completely.
  5. Attach blades and test operation. Install the fan blades to the motor using the provided hardware, ensuring each blade is securely fastened and properly balanced. If your fan includes a light kit, wire and install it according to manufacturer directions. Restore power at the breaker and test both fan operation and any lighting functions before completing the installation.
