How to Install Bifold Closet Doors

Bifold doors are the workhorses of residential storage, offering full access to a closet without the wide swing radius of traditional hinged doors. When installed correctly, they glide silently and stay perfectly flush; when installed poorly, they stick, jump off their tracks, or hang at an unsightly angle. The secret to a professional result lies in the initial measurement and the plumb alignment of the hardware. Taking your time to center the top track and set the floor pivot is the difference between a functional door and a recurring frustration. We are going to ensure that the frame is square and the hardware is anchored deep enough to withstand the daily use of a busy household. Follow these steps, and your closet will operate with the smoothness of a high-end custom build.

  1. Center the Track First. Measure the width of your door opening and cut the track to length if necessary. Center the track in the door frame header and secure it with screws through the pre-drilled holes.
  2. Plumb the Pivot Points. Install the top pivot bracket into the track at the side where the door will hinge. Screw the bottom pivot bracket into the floor or the wall jamb, ensuring it is perfectly plumb with the top track.
  3. Attach Pins and Wheels. Attach the top and bottom pivot pins into the hardware on the door panels. Screw the guide wheel into the top of the outer door panel.
  4. Lift and Engage. Lift the panels, insert the top pivot pin into the bracket, and then set the bottom pin into the floor bracket. Engage the top guide wheel into the track.
  5. Fine-Tune the Gaps. Use the adjustment nut on the bottom pivot to raise or lower the door. Slide the top pivot in the track to ensure the gap between the doors and the frame is consistent.
  6. Install the Handle. Mark the center of the outer door panel, roughly 36 inches from the floor, and drill the hole for your handle. Tighten the hardware securely.
