How to Install a Privacy Door Lock
Privacy locks are the standard for bedrooms and bathrooms, providing just enough security to keep wandering guests or curious kids from walking in unannounced. Unlike keyed entry sets, these locks feature a simple thumb-turn or push-button mechanism on the interior side and an emergency release hole on the exterior. Installing one is a straightforward task that upgrades the feel and function of your room in under an hour. When done well, the bolt moves smoothly without resistance, the latch clicks firmly into the strike plate, and the handles sit perfectly flush against the door surface.
- Strip the Old Hardware. Unscrew the two visible screws on the interior rosette or handle plate. Pull both sides of the handle set apart and slide the latch out from the edge of the door.
- Seat the Latch Flush. Slide the new latch mechanism into the hole on the edge of the door. Ensure the beveled edge of the latch faces toward the door frame so the door closes smoothly.
- Position Outer Handle First. Insert the exterior handle, ensuring the spindle passes through the square hole in the latch mechanism. Hold it steady against the face of the door.
- Secure the Inner Handle. Align the interior handle with the spindle and the mounting posts from the exterior side. Insert the mounting screws and tighten them until the handle assembly is firm against the door.
- Reinforce the Strike Plate. Remove the old strike plate from the door frame and replace it with the new one provided in the kit. Secure it firmly with the longer screws included to ensure the door stays shut.
- Verify Every Function Works. Turn the thumb-turn or push the button to engage the lock, then try to turn the handle. Use the emergency release key to confirm you can still unlock the door from the outside.
