Install Bedside Floating Shelves
Nightstands eat floor space in small bedrooms, and their legs become magnets for dust and lost socks. Floating shelves beside the bed solve both problems while adding clean horizontal lines that make a room feel larger than it is. The installation itself is straightforward — mount hidden brackets to studs, slide on the shelf boxes — but getting the height and spacing right matters more than most people think. Too high and you're reaching awkwardly for your phone at 2am. Too low and the visual proportion feels off, like the shelf is sliding down the wall. Done well, floating bedside shelves disappear into the architecture while holding everything a nightstand would: a lamp, a book, a glass of water, and the miscellaneous debris of evening routines.
- Find and mark the studs. Use a stud finder to locate two studs on each side of the bed, 16 or 24 inches apart depending on your wall framing. Mark the stud centers with a pencil at your planned shelf height, typically 18-24 inches above the top of your mattress. Hold a shelf up at this height while sitting in bed to confirm you can reach it comfortably without stretching.
- Level and mark the bracket rail. Hold the mounting bracket rail against the wall at your marked height, centering it over the stud marks. Place a 24-inch level on top and adjust until perfectly level. Mark the screw hole locations through the bracket with a pencil, then set the bracket aside.
- Drill pilot holes. Drill pilot holes at each marked screw location using a 3/16-inch bit, going about 2.5 inches deep into the stud. The pilot hole prevents the wood from splitting and makes the lag screws easier to drive. Clear sawdust from holes with a quick blast of air or a vacuum.
- Mount the bracket rail. Align the bracket rail with your pilot holes and drive the included lag screws through the bracket into the studs using a socket wrench or impact driver. Tighten firmly but don't overtorque — the bracket should feel rock-solid with no movement when you pull down on it with your full weight.
- Attach the shelf box. Slide the hollow shelf box onto the bracket rail from the side or front, depending on your bracket design. Most floating shelf systems have a channel or cleat inside the box that slides over the rail. Push firmly until the shelf seats completely against the wall with no gap.
- Secure the shelf. Drive the set screws or locking screws through the access holes inside or underneath the shelf box to lock it onto the bracket rail. These prevent the shelf from sliding off accidentally. Some systems use cam locks or clips instead — follow the specific mechanism for your shelf.
- Repeat for the second shelf. Install the second bedside shelf using the same process. Measure from the floor to the top of the first shelf, then replicate that exact height on the opposite side of the bed. Use your level to confirm both shelves align horizontally when you stand at the foot of the bed.
- Load and adjust. Place your lamp, books, and other items on the shelves, distributing weight evenly. Check that the shelves remain level under load. Fill any visible seams between the shelf and wall with paintable caulk if desired, then touch up with wall paint for a fully integrated look.
