How to Install a Bedside Wall Sconce

Lighting defines the sanctuary of a bedroom, and wall sconces provide the most elegant solution for bedside illumination. Moving your lamps off the nightstand clears visual clutter and creates a hotel-inspired aesthetic that feels custom-built rather than purchased from a catalog. Executing this project well requires precision in placement and a steady hand with electrical wiring. When done correctly, the fixture sits perfectly flush against the drywall without gaps, and the switch remains easily reachable from your pillow. Proper installation ensures your bedroom lighting is both functional and a permanent improvement to your home's value.

  1. Kill the Power First. Locate your home's electrical panel and flip the breaker serving the bedroom to the off position. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the existing wall switch or outlet to confirm the circuit is truly dead before touching any wires.
  2. Find Your Perfect Spot. Determine the ideal height for your sconce, usually 24 to 30 inches above the mattress surface. Hold the sconce base against the wall and use a level to ensure the mounting holes are perfectly vertical before marking them with a pencil.
  3. Secure the Box Flush. If you don't have an existing junction box, use a drywall saw to cut a hole for an 'old work' plastic electrical box. Secure the box into the drywall by tightening the mounting wings until it is flush and immovable.
  4. Strip with Precision. Pull the house wiring through the back of the electrical box. Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation off the ends of the black (hot), white (neutral), and copper (ground) wires using wire strippers.
  5. Connect and Nest Wires. Connect the fixture wires to the house wires using wire nuts: black to black, white to white, and ground to the green grounding screw or copper pigtail. Gently fold the wires into the junction box, ensuring they are not pinched.
  6. Mount Tight and Flush. Align the sconce canopy with the mounting bracket or screw holes in the junction box. Drive the provided machine screws through the canopy into the box until the fixture is tight and flush against the wall.
