How to Install a Ceiling Fan Remote Control Kit

Ceiling fans are essential for comfort, but the pull-chain is a relic of the past that frequently breaks or remains frustratingly out of reach. Upgrading to a remote control kit transforms your fan into a modern, convenient appliance, allowing you to control speed and lighting from anywhere in the room. When done well, the installation is clean, quiet, and completely invisible behind the fan's canopy. Success in this project depends entirely on your comfort with basic electrical wiring and your ability to manage space. Most fans have very limited room inside the mounting bracket; the trick is to fold the wires neatly so the canopy slides back into place without pinching. Take your time, double-check your connections, and always confirm the power is off at the breaker before you begin.

  1. Cut Power First. Go to your electrical panel and flip the breaker that controls the fan circuit. Verify the power is off by testing the fan switches before touching any wires.
  2. Expose the Bracket. Unscrew the canopy cover at the ceiling to expose the mounting bracket and the wire connections. Carefully lower the canopy, but be mindful not to pull on any existing wires.
  3. Document, Then Disconnect. Identify the household wires coming from the ceiling and the fan motor wires. Undo the wire nuts and separate the connections, leaving the ground wire attached.
  4. Connect the Receiver. Connect the receiver module to the house power and the fan motor according to the manual's color-coding. Use the provided wire nuts to secure each connection, ensuring no bare copper is exposed.
  5. Bundle and Tuck Neatly. Tuck the receiver unit into the mounting bracket or the top of the canopy. Gently fold and push the excess wire length inside the canopy cavity to clear the way for the cover.
  6. Seal the Canopy. Slide the canopy back up into position against the ceiling. Tighten the mounting screws, ensuring no wires are pinched between the canopy and the ceiling mounting bracket.
  7. Pair the Remote. Restore power at the breaker, then turn on the wall switch. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the 'learn' or 'power' button on the remote to sync it with the receiver.
