How to Install a Floating Nightstand
Nightstands are often the forgotten workhorses of the bedroom, yet they frequently consume valuable floor space that makes a room feel crowded. By elevating your bedside table, you instantly create a lighter, more open aesthetic while simplifying the nightly ritual of floor cleaning. A floating nightstand relies entirely on the integrity of your wall structure, so the installation isn't just about looks—it is a project of precision and structural support. Done well, a floating unit feels rock-solid to the touch and disappears into the wall, appearing as though it were part of the architecture rather than an afterthought. The key lies in finding your studs and ensuring your leveling is perfect before the final drive of the screws. If the unit sits perfectly level and resists movement under pressure, you have succeeded in turning a simple piece of furniture into a permanent, functional feature of your bedroom.
- Find Your Wall's Hidden Bones. Use a stud finder to locate the structural members behind the drywall. Mark the center of each stud clearly with a pencil, ensuring the marks align with the mounting holes on the back of your nightstand bracket.
- Mark Your Perfect Height. Hold the nightstand against the wall at your desired height—typically level with the top of your mattress. Use a pencil to mark the top edge of the unit on the wall so you know exactly where the mounting plate should sit.
- Dead Level, Every Time. Align your mounting cleat or bracket with your marks, place a bubble level on top, and adjust until the air bubble is centered. Once level, use a pencil to mark the pilot hole locations through the bracket holes.
- Drill Into Solid Wood. Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the shank of your lag screws. Drill directly into your marked stud locations to prevent the wood from splitting when the screws are driven home.
- Lock In The Bracket. Drive the mounting screws through the bracket and into the studs using an impact driver or wrench. Ensure the bracket is pulled tight against the wall surface without crushing the drywall.
- Set It And Secure It. Slide or hook the nightstand onto the installed bracket according to the manufacturer's design. If the unit includes a locking set screw underneath, tighten it to prevent the nightstand from sliding off the mount.
