How to Replace Interior Door Hardware

D Door hardware is the easiest way to refresh a home's interior without breaking your budget. Over time, knobs become loose, finishes fade, or latches stick, making them a common frustration. Replacing these is a simple mechanical swap that transforms how a room feels the moment you grip the handle. Done well, the new knob should sit perfectly level, the latch should retract without friction, and the strike plate should align seamlessly with the frame. Focus on the internal alignment during installation, and you will have a smooth, quiet door operation that feels brand new.

  1. Strip Out the Old Hardware. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws on the interior side of the knob. Pull both sides of the handle off the door and slide the latch mechanism out from the edge of the door.
  2. Set the Latch Mechanism. Insert the new latch mechanism into the hole on the edge of the door. Ensure the beveled edge of the latch faces toward the direction the door closes.
  3. Align the Spindle Shaft. Insert the exterior knob assembly, ensuring the spindle passes through the latch mechanism. Align the posts on the back of the exterior knob with the holes in the latch.
  4. Secure Both Knob Halves. Place the interior knob onto the spindle and mounting posts. Insert the provided screws and tighten them until the knob is secure, but do not overtighten, which can cause the handle to stick.
  5. Swap the Strike Plate. Unscrew the old plate on the door frame and replace it with the new one. Use the screws included with your new hardware set.
  6. Test Full Door Operation. Turn the knob several times to ensure the latch retracts fully. Close the door to verify the latch clicks into the strike plate without needing to push or pull the door.
