How to Install Recessed Ceiling Lights

Recessed lighting, often called can lights, transforms a cramped or dim room by pushing the hardware flush into the ceiling. By eliminating bulky hanging fixtures, you create a cleaner sightline and a more expansive feel in bedrooms or living areas. A job done well results in evenly spaced pools of light that don't flicker or sag, all while maintaining the vital fire-resistance of your ceiling cavity. Electrical work is straightforward if you respect the power. Before you cut a single hole, ensure your circuit is dead and verify it with a non-contact tester. Once the power is handled, the remaining work is purely structural: drilling, fishing wire, and snapping the trim into place. Follow the layout spacing precisely to avoid the dreaded 'spotlight effect' and ensure your ceiling remains a uniform, professional surface.

  1. Find Your Light Positions. Measure the ceiling to determine the spacing between lights, typically 4 to 6 feet apart. Use a stud finder to locate ceiling joists and mark your holes where they won't interfere with the wood framing.
  2. Kill the Power First. Switch off the circuit breaker for the room you are working in. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the switch or any existing fixture in the room to confirm zero power flow.
  3. Saw Out the Openings. Use a drywall saw to cut out the circles you marked earlier. Stay inside your pencil lines to ensure the light housing flange covers the gap securely.
  4. Route Your Electrical Cable. Fish your non-metallic electrical cable (NM-B) from the power source to each hole location. Use the existing wiring path if possible, or use a flexible fish tape to pull wire between joists.
  5. Secure the Housing Fixtures. Insert the light housings through the ceiling holes and secure them to the joists using the provided mounting bars or clips. Ensure the bottom edge is flush with the ceiling surface.
  6. Wire and Trim Out. Open the junction box on each housing and connect the black (hot), white (neutral), and copper (ground) wires. Snap the housing cover shut and install the light trim and bulbs.
