How to Install Transition Strips Between Rooms

Transitions are the unsung heroes of a clean home layout. They bridge the height difference between different floor materials, protecting the exposed edges of your carpet, tile, or hardwood while preventing the annoying trips that happen when a floor edge starts to lift. A well-installed transition strip creates a seamless visual flow and keeps your flooring secure under foot traffic. Done well, this project takes less than an hour and completely changes the professional feel of your room thresholds. The key is in the precision of the cut and ensuring the floor beneath is clear of debris so the adhesive or track sits perfectly flush. Don't rush the measurement; a tight fit between door jambs is what separates a DIY job from a true professional finish.

  1. Nail the Measurement First. Measure the exact distance between the two door jambs at the floor level using a tape measure. Transfer this measurement to your transition strip and cut it to length using a hacksaw or a miter saw with a fine-tooth blade.
  2. Clear Every Speck. Remove any old adhesive, nails, or debris from the gap between the two floors. Vacuum the area thoroughly to ensure the subfloor is flat and free of dust, which allows the strip to bond properly.
  3. Mark Before You Drill. If using a screw-down system, align the metal mounting track in the center of the gap. Mark the drill holes on the subfloor and set the track aside.
  4. Lock It Down Flush. Drill pilot holes into the subfloor at your marks and insert the provided plastic anchors. Place the track back over the anchors and drive the screws until the track is firmly seated.
  5. Bond It Securely. If using an adhesive-backed strip, apply a thin bead of construction adhesive to the subfloor if the floor is uneven. Press the strip firmly into place, ensuring the edges overlap both flooring materials smoothly.
  6. Tap Until It Clicks. Align the top transition piece with the mounting track or adhesive strip. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the transition strip into place until you hear it click or seat firmly.
