How to Replace a Hollow Core Door with a Solid Core Door

Doors are the unsung heroes of soundproofing and privacy in a home. While hollow core doors are cheap and light, they are essentially cardboard-filled shells that do nothing to block noise or provide a feeling of substance when you close them. Replacing one with a solid core slab is one of the most effective ways to make a room feel premium and quiet. Successfully swapping a door requires patience rather than raw strength. Because solid core doors are significantly heavier, you must ensure your hinges are reinforced and the door is planed perfectly to fit your existing frame. A door done well hangs square, swings without dragging, and latches with a satisfying, muffled click.

1. Measure Old Door Precisely. Remove the existing door by tapping the hinge pins out from the bottom. Measure the width, height, and thickness of the old door at three points each to account for any slight warping in the frame.
2. Trace Old Door Template. Lay your new solid core door on sawhorses. Place your old door on top, flush against the hinge side, and trace the hinge mortises and the latch hole onto the new door with a sharp pencil.
3. Cut New Door to Spec. Use a circular saw with a fine-tooth blade to trim the new door to the exact dimensions of your old one. Use a straight-edge guide clamped to the door to keep your cut perfectly straight.
4. Carve Hinge Mortises Flush. Use a hammer and wood chisel to carve out the mortises for the hinges based on your traced marks. Ensure the depth of the mortise is exactly the thickness of the hinge leaf so it sits flush.
5. Install Handle and Latch. Drill the holes for your door handle and latch mechanism using a door hole saw kit. Secure the strike plate to the door frame and install the handle set.
6. Hang Door with Help. Mount the hinges to the door slab first, then lift the door into the frame. Use shims at the bottom to hold the door at the correct height while you screw the hinges into the existing frame mortises.
