How to Replace Broken Bed Frame Slats

Slat failure is an inevitable annoyance for anyone who sleeps on a platform bed. When a board snaps, you lose the structural integrity of the frame, causing the mattress to sag and your back to suffer. Most store-bought beds come with cheap, thin plywood slats that flex until they break under pressure. Replacing them with solid wood is a permanent fix that provides better support for both your mattress and your body. By using kiln-dried pine, you create a rigid foundation that won't give out during the night. A job well done means a silent, level sleep surface that will likely outlast the frame itself.

  1. Measure Before You Buy. Remove the mattress and the broken slats from the frame. Measure the exact interior width of the bed frame and the length of your original slats to ensure a perfect fit.
  2. Choose Straight, Solid Pine. Purchase 1x4 or 1x3 kiln-dried pine boards from your local hardware store based on your measurements. Ensure the boards are straight and free of large knots, which are weak points.
  3. Cut Boards to Exact Fit. Using a miter saw or a hand saw, cut the pine boards to the exact width required for your frame. Wear safety glasses while cutting to protect against wood chips.
  4. Smooth All Cut Edges. Run a piece of medium-grit sandpaper over the cut ends of your new slats. This removes splinters that could snag your mattress fabric or box spring.
  5. Screw Slats to Rails. Place the new slats into the frame, aligning them with the existing support rails. Use a power drill to drive a single wood screw through each end of the slat into the side rail.
  6. Lock Down All Slats. Before placing the mattress back, apply pressure to each slat with your hands to ensure there is no movement or rocking. If a slat feels loose, tighten the screw until it sits flush against the rail.
