How to Install Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting transforms a dark backyard into an inviting outdoor living space while improving safety along walkways. By using a low-voltage system, you avoid the hazards of high-voltage wiring, making this an accessible project for any homeowner comfortable with basic manual tools. A system done well is invisible. The wires remain buried, the transformer is tucked neatly near an outlet, and the light fixtures are positioned to highlight textures rather than creating blinding glare. Take your time to plan your light placement at night before digging, as light behaves differently in the dark than it does on paper.

  1. Stagger Lights for Natural Look. Place your light fixtures around the patio or path while it is dark outside. Use flags or markers to note where each light will go and where the transformer will be mounted.
  2. Mount Transformer Safely. Mount the transformer to the exterior wall near a GFCI outdoor outlet. Ensure it is at least 12 inches above the ground to protect it from standing water.
  3. Run Cable to Each Fixture. Run your low-voltage cable from the transformer to each light location. Keep the cable on the surface for now to ensure you have enough length to reach every fixture.
  4. Seat All Connections Firmly. Attach each light fixture to the main cable using the provided quick-connect clips. Push the clip onto the wire until the internal pins pierce the insulation and make contact.
  5. Verify All Lights Glow. Plug the transformer into the outlet and turn it on to verify every light is functioning correctly. Fix any loose connections before moving to the burial step.
  6. Bury Cable Without Damage. Use a flat-head shovel to create a 3- to 4-inch deep trench along your cable route. Tuck the wire into the trench and replace the soil.
