Installing Permanent Deck String Lights
Lighting transforms a deck from a dark, unused platform into an evening living room. The key to a professional look is avoiding the 'sagging rope' aesthetic by using a steel guide wire to carry the weight of the lights rather than letting the fragile light strings themselves handle the tension. Well-done string lighting relies on rigid anchor points and secure hardware. When installed correctly, your lights will withstand seasonal winds and remain taut throughout the year. Take the time to map out your layout first to ensure you have enough length to reach your power source without relying on dangerous extension cord runs across walking paths.
- Sketch Your Light Path. Measure the perimeter or zigzag path where the lights will hang. Ensure your path terminates near a GFI-protected outdoor outlet.
- Anchor to Solid Structure. Screw heavy-duty eye hooks or eyebolts into the deck posts or exterior wall studs. Ensure you are driving into solid wood, not just thin trim or siding.
- Thread Cable Through Path. Attach one end of the aircraft cable to a turnbuckle on an anchor hook. Thread the cable through your path, looping through each subsequent anchor point until you reach the final turnbuckle.
- Lock Tension in Place. Use wire rope clamps to lock the cable at the correct tension. Use a cable cutter to trim any excess length once the tension is set.
- Attach Lights to Cable. Use UV-resistant zip ties or specialized light hooks to fasten the light string to the aircraft cable. Space your ties every 12 to 24 inches for even support.
- Power Up and Test. Plug the light string into the outlet, using a weatherproof cover if the connection is exposed to the elements. Test each bulb before finishing.
