How to Install a Pocket Door

Installing a pocket door requires framing a cavity in the wall, installing the track system, hanging the door, and finishing with trim work, typically taking a full weekend for most homeowners.

  1. Measure Twice, Frame Once. Measure your door width and add 4 inches for the rough opening width. The pocket needs to be twice the door width plus 2 inches. Check for electrical wiring, plumbing, or HVAC in the wall where the pocket will go. Mark the floor and ceiling locations with chalk lines.
  2. Build the Hidden Wall Cavity. Remove drywall from the pocket area and existing doorway. Install a header beam across the top of the opening that can support the load above. Frame the rough opening with 2x4 studs, ensuring it's plumb and square. The opening should be 2 inches wider than your door and 82 inches tall for standard 80-inch doors.
  3. Anchor the Frame Kit. Assemble the metal pocket door frame according to manufacturer instructions. Slide the frame into the rough opening and secure it to the header and floor with screws. Use a level to ensure the track is perfectly level and plumb. Attach the split studs that will support drywall on both sides of the pocket.
  4. Set Up the Tracking System. Mount the track to the header inside the frame kit, ensuring it's level along its entire length. Install the door guides at the bottom of the opening. Attach the roller hardware to the top of your door, positioning it according to the manufacturer's specifications for your door weight and width.
  5. Hang and Test. Lift the door and hook the rollers onto the track. Test the door movement and adjust the rollers if needed to ensure smooth operation and proper alignment. The door should slide easily without binding or dragging. Install the door pull flush with the door surface.
  6. Seal and Trim Out. Cut drywall to fit around the frame, leaving access to adjustment screws. Apply joint compound, sand smooth, and prime. Install trim around the opening to match your existing woodwork. Add a door stop at the fully opened position if desired.
