How to Install a Weatherproof Exterior Outlet

Power outdoors transforms a deck or patio from a static space into a functional workspace or entertainment zone. Whether you are plugging in landscape lights or a portable grill, having a reliable, code-compliant power source right where you need it makes the difference between a project that gets done and one that gathers dust. Safety is the absolute priority here. You are working with high-voltage lines that sit behind a wall exposed to the elements. Achieving a 'done well' result means creating a watertight seal that prevents moisture from ever reaching your wiring connections, while ensuring your new outlet is protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) to prevent shock.

  1. Kill Power First. Turn off the main breaker for the room where you are pulling power from. Test the outlet you intend to tap into with a voltage tester to ensure the power is truly dead before opening any boxes.
  2. Plot Your Exit Point. Measure the location for your new outlet on the exterior wall. Use the back of your mounting block or exterior box as a template to trace the opening onto the siding.
  3. Angle Down for Drainage. Drill a pilot hole through the wall from the inside to confirm your exit point. Use a jigsaw or oscillating tool to cut through the siding and sheathing to fit your exterior junction box.
  4. Thread Cable Through Wall. Fish a length of UF-B (Underground Feeder) wire from the interior junction box or existing outlet through the wall to your new exterior location. Leave at least 12 inches of slack at the exterior box for connections.
  5. Seal Every Gap. Secure the weatherproof junction box to the exterior wall using exterior-grade screws. Apply a thick bead of silicone caulk around the perimeter where the box meets the siding to create a permanent water barrier.
  6. Lock Down Protection. Connect the UF-B wire to your GFCI receptacle, ensuring the ground wire is properly attached to the green grounding screw. Secure the outlet into the box and install the 'in-use' weatherproof cover plate.
