How to Install a Deadbolt from Scratch

Security begins with a solid, properly aligned deadbolt that resists force and operates smoothly. Unlike replacing an existing lock, starting from scratch requires you to cut a clean hole through the door face and chisel a mortise into the door edge, making measurement accuracy the single most important factor in the success of the installation. Done well, the bolt throws into the strike plate with zero resistance and the key turns without catching. A sloppy installation, conversely, leaves the door vulnerable to bypass and causes premature wear on the internal lock mechanism. Take your time with the template, and do not rush the drilling process.

  1. Mark Your Target Height. Place the cardboard template provided with your deadbolt kit against the door at your preferred height, typically 36 to 44 inches from the floor. Use a pencil to mark the center point on both the face of the door and the center of the door edge.
  2. Bore the Main Hole. Use a 2-1/8 inch hole saw bit to drill the main lock body hole through the door face. Drill halfway through from one side, then finish from the other side to prevent the wood from splintering.
  3. Cut the Latch Hole. Use a 1-inch spade bit to drill the hole for the latch assembly into the center of the door edge. Ensure your drill is held perfectly level so the bolt travels straight into the door jamb.
  4. Chisel the Plate Recess. Insert the latch bolt into the edge hole and trace the outline of its faceplate onto the door. Use a sharp wood chisel and mallet to carve out a recess so the plate sits flush with the surface of the door edge.
  5. Secure the Latch Body. Slide the latch assembly into the edge hole and secure it with the provided wood screws. Ensure the word 'TOP' on the latch is facing upward and the slanted side of the bolt faces the door jamb.
  6. Install the Lock Cylinder. Feed the lock cylinder through the face hole and connect it to the thumb turn or keyed backplate on the interior. Tighten the mounting bolts firmly, ensuring the assembly is perfectly vertical and aligned.
  7. Mount the Strike Plate. Close the door and turn the deadbolt to mark the exact position on the jamb. Mortise the area for the strike plate and secure it with the long, 3-inch security screws provided in the kit.
