How to Install a Level Stone Paver Patio
Patios are the bedrock of outdoor living, and building one correctly is less about artistic flair and more about the hidden foundation beneath the stones. When a patio settles or shifts over time, it is almost always because the ground preparation was rushed. A properly installed stone patio should feel as solid as a sidewalk, with enough drainage to prevent pooling and a slight pitch to guide water away from your home's foundation. Done well, your paver patio will stand for decades without cracking or weeds poking through the joints. The secret lies in the compaction of your sub-base and ensuring your base material is perfectly level before the first stone touches the ground. Take your time with the digging and the screeding; the patience you invest now pays off in a flat, stable surface that doesn't hold puddles after a spring rain.
- Outline and Slope the Space. Outline your patio area with string lines and marking paint. Dig out the soil to a depth of 8 inches, ensuring the area slopes slightly away from the house at a rate of 1 inch for every 4 feet of length.
- Lock Down the Gravel Base. Fill the excavated area with 4 inches of crushed angular gravel (¾-inch minus). Use a plate compactor to run over the gravel multiple times until it is rock-hard and does not shift under your weight.
- Anchor the Perimeter. Install plastic or metal paver edge restraints around the perimeter. Secure them into the compacted base using 10-inch landscape spikes driven through the edging into the gravel.
- Screed Sand Perfectly Level. Spread 1 inch of clean, coarse sand over the compacted gravel. Use two lengths of 1-inch PVC pipe as guide rails and pull a long, straight 2x4 board across them to screed the sand until it is perfectly flat.
- Set Stones Tight and Level. Start laying your pavers from one corner or a straight edge, moving across the patio. Keep them tight together or follow the manufacturer's spacers, ensuring each paver sits level on the sand bed without rocking.
- Lock Joints and Complete. Spread fine polymeric sand over the entire patio, sweeping it into the joints between the stones. Run the plate compactor one final time over the pavers to lock them in place, then add more sand if the levels drop.
