How to Install Outdoor Security Lights
Security lights are the single most effective way to discourage unwanted visitors while making your driveway or entryway safer for you after dark. A well-placed floodlight turns a cavernous, pitch-black backyard into a visible, manageable space, giving you peace of mind whether you are coming home late or simply checking on a noise outside. Installing these lights is a straightforward electrical task if you have an existing junction box, but it demands strict attention to moisture sealing. Done well, your new lights will be flush against the wall, perfectly aimed, and shielded from the elements for years. Never cut corners on the weatherproofing; if water gets into the junction box, the entire system will fail.
- Kill the Power First. Turn off the specific circuit breaker that controls the exterior wall you are working on. Verify the power is off using a non-contact voltage tester on the existing light or outlet wires.
- Strip Away the Old. Unscrew the old fixture from the junction box and gently pull it away from the wall. Disconnect the wire nuts and remove the old mounting bracket.
- Bare the Copper. Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation off the ends of the supply wires if they are frayed or damaged. Ensure the ground wire is accessible and ready to attach to the new fixture.
- Level and Secure. Attach the new mounting bracket included with the kit to the junction box using the provided screws. Ensure it is level so your light sits square against the siding.
- Wire It Up Right. Match the black (hot), white (neutral), and green or bare (ground) wires from the light to the corresponding house wires using wire nuts. Tuck the connected wires neatly back into the junction box.
- Seal Against the Elements. Apply a bead of exterior-grade silicone caulk around the top and sides of the light fixture where it meets the house. Bolt the fixture to the mounting bracket until it is snug against the wall.
