How to Install a Video Doorbell

Doorbell cameras have fundamentally changed how we secure our front entries, turning a simple chime into a 24-hour security hub. Unlike traditional doorbells that only provide an audio alert, these devices offer visual oversight that discourages porch pirates and keeps you connected to your home even when you are miles away. Successfully installing one requires a basic understanding of low-voltage electrical systems, but the process is straightforward for anyone comfortable with a drill and a screwdriver. The key to a clean, reliable installation is managing the existing wires properly and ensuring the device is mounted securely against the elements to prevent moisture ingress.

  1. Kill the Power First. Locate your home's electrical panel and switch off the breaker connected to the existing doorbell. Test the old button by pressing it to ensure it no longer chimes before proceeding.
  2. Free Up the Wires. Unscrew the old doorbell button from the exterior wall and gently pull the two wires out of the wall cavity. Use a piece of tape to secure the wires so they do not fall back into the hole.
  3. Anchor the Baseplate. Hold the new mounting bracket against the wall where the wires emerge, using the provided level tool if included. Mark the pilot holes with a pencil and drill them into the siding or masonry, inserting wall anchors if necessary.
  4. Wire the Camera Unit. Loosen the terminal screws on the back of the camera unit and loop the doorbell wires around them. Tighten the screws until the wires are firmly gripped; polarity generally does not matter for standard AC doorbell systems.
  5. Lock Down the Unit. Tuck the excess wire back into the wall opening and snap or screw the camera unit onto the baseplate. Most modern units have a security screw on the bottom to prevent easy theft.
  6. Connect and Configure. Switch the breaker back on and wait for the device to enter pairing mode. Follow the manufacturer's mobile app instructions to connect the camera to your home Wi-Fi and adjust motion sensitivity zones.
