How to Install Motion-Sensor Security Lighting
Security lighting acts as the first line of defense for your property, deterring unwanted visitors by eliminating dark corners and blind spots. A properly installed motion-sensor light doesn't just add safety; it provides a sense of control over your home's perimeter, ensuring the lights are only on when you actually need them. Installing these fixtures is a straightforward electrical task if you have an existing junction box, but it demands absolute attention to safety. Done well, the unit will be securely weather-sealed against the siding, aimed precisely to cover your target area, and wired so the sensor operates without phantom flickering.
- Kill Power First, Always. Go to your main electrical panel and switch off the breaker controlling the exterior light circuit. Verify the power is off by testing the existing light with a non-contact voltage tester.
- Strip Away the Old. Unscrew the existing light fixture from the junction box and carefully pull it away from the wall. Disconnect the wire nuts to free the wires, then inspect the box to ensure it is rated for exterior use.
- Level and Secure Base. Secure the new mounting bracket or base plate to the junction box using the provided screws. Ensure the plate is level and flush against the wall surface.
- Match Wires, Test Tight. Connect the ground wire to the green grounding screw or copper wire in the box, then match the white to white and black to black using wire nuts. Tuck the connected wires neatly back into the junction box.
- Weatherproof Without Trapping. Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the perimeter of the fixture base where it meets the wall. Screw the fixture into the mounting plate, ensuring the gasket is compressed tightly.
- Verify Sensor Aim and Range. Restore power at the breaker and turn on the wall switch. Walk through the sensor's range to verify it triggers correctly, then adjust the sensitivity and duration knobs on the unit.
