How to Install a Smart Video Doorbell

A doorbell is the digital threshold of your home, and replacing your existing chime-button with a video unit provides an immediate security upgrade. The process relies on existing low-voltage wiring, making it a straightforward project that connects your home's exterior to your smartphone in under an hour. Done well, your smart doorbell should sit flush against the wall with no exposed wiring and provide a clear, unobstructed field of view. A successful installation depends entirely on verifying the voltage of your current transformer and ensuring the mechanical chime remains compatible with the new digital load.

  1. Kill the Power First. Locate your doorbell transformer or the breaker controlling the doorbell circuit and switch it off. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the existing doorbell wires to confirm there is no live current flowing.
  2. Strip Out the Old Unit. Unscrew the existing doorbell button from your door frame or siding. Gently pull the two wires out of the wall and secure them with a piece of painter's tape so they do not fall back into the hole.
  3. Mount the Bracket Level. Hold the new mounting bracket against the wall at the desired height. Use a level to ensure it is plumb, mark the screw holes with a pencil, and drill pilot holes based on the manufacturer's anchor size.
  4. Connect the Wires Tight. Loosen the two terminal screws on the back of the video doorbell. Wrap one existing wire around each terminal and tighten the screws; it does not matter which wire goes to which terminal for standard AC doorbells.
  5. Secure the Camera Angle. Tuck the excess wire back into the wall hole or the designated housing cavity. Push the doorbell unit firmly onto the mounting bracket until you hear a mechanical click, or secure it with the provided security screw.
  6. Sync and Test Live Feed. Turn the power back on at the breaker. Follow the specific mobile app instructions to pair the device to your home Wi-Fi network and verify that the video feed appears on your phone.
