How to Install a Wood Burning Fireplace Insert
Installing a wood burning fireplace insert requires connecting the unit to your existing chimney with proper liner, securing it in the firebox, and ensuring adequate ventilation and clearances for safe operation.
- Verify Your Fireplace Dimensions. Measure the width, height, and depth of your fireplace opening to ensure your insert will fit properly. Clean out all debris, ash, and buildup from the firebox. Remove the damper or secure it in the open position. Check that your chimney is in good condition and properly sized for the insert you're installing.
- Run Steel Liner Top to Bottom. Lower a stainless steel flexible liner from the top of the chimney down to the fireplace opening. The liner diameter should match your insert's flue outlet. Connect the liner to the top of the chimney with a cap and secure it. Leave enough liner length at the bottom to connect to your insert with about 6 inches of overlap.
- Level and Secure the Insert. Slide the insert into the fireplace opening, leaving proper clearances on all sides according to manufacturer specifications. Most inserts need 1-3 inches on the sides and back. The insert should sit level and stable on the fireplace floor. Use adjustable legs if your insert has them to achieve proper positioning.
- Seal All Flue Connections. Attach the insert's flue collar to the chimney liner using the appropriate connector pipe and clamps. Ensure the connection is secure and sealed. The joint should be smooth with no gaps or obstructions that could impede airflow or create draft issues.
- Block Heat Loss Above. Pack insulation around the liner in the damper area to prevent heat loss and improve efficiency. Use only insulation rated for high temperatures. Install a block-off plate above the insert to seal the chimney and prevent air from bypassing the insert. This plate should have a hole sized for your liner.
- Frame the Final Look. Install the decorative surround panel that came with your insert to cover the gap between the insert and your fireplace opening. Secure it according to manufacturer instructions. Add any trim pieces to create a finished appearance that matches your room's decor.
- Confirm Proper Venting. Open the air controls and build a small test fire using dry kindling and newspaper. Check that smoke draws properly up the chimney without entering the room. Verify that all connections are secure and no smoke leaks from joints. Let the fire burn completely and check for proper operation of all controls.
