How to Install Motion-Activated Security Lights on Your Garage
Gaps in your home's exterior security often start at the garage, where dark corners invite unwanted guests. Installing motion-activated floodlights provides an immediate, effective deterrent while ensuring you aren't fumbling for keys in the dark. Done well, this project integrates seamlessly with your existing electrical setup, using weather-tight seals and precise sensor calibration to avoid false triggers from passing cars or blowing branches. This guide assumes you have an existing junction box; if you are pulling new power, always prioritize safety and local electrical codes.
- Kill the Power First. Go to your main electrical panel and flip the breaker dedicated to your garage exterior lights. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the existing fixture or wires to confirm the circuit is completely dead before touching anything.
- Strip Out the Old. Unscrew the existing light fixture from the wall or junction box. Carefully detach the wire nuts and separate the wires, noting which wire goes to the house ground and power supply.
- Level the Mounting Plate. Attach the provided mounting plate to the electrical junction box using the included machine screws. Ensure the plate is level so your sensor isn't tilted at an awkward angle.
- Match the Wires Precisely. Match the black (hot), white (neutral), and green or copper (ground) wires from the house to the corresponding leads on the new fixture. Use twist-on wire connectors, ensuring no bare copper is visible outside the cap.
- Seal It Tight. Push the wires back into the junction box, being careful not to pinch them. Align the fixture with the mounting plate and secure it with the provided nuts or bolts, ensuring the rubber gasket creates a tight seal against the wall.
- Dial In the Sensitivity. Switch the power back on and set the dials on the motion sensor to 'test' mode. Walk across the detection zone to confirm the light triggers, then adjust the timer and sensitivity settings to your preference.
