How to Install a Pull-Out Trash Can in Kitchen Cabinets

Install a pull-out trash can system by mounting drawer slides inside your cabinet and attaching a frame that holds your garbage bin.

  1. Match System to Cabinet Size. Measure your cabinet interior width, depth, and height. Most pull-out trash systems fit standard 15-inch or 18-inch wide cabinets. Select a system that matches your cabinet size and can accommodate your preferred trash can capacity. Single-bin systems work for smaller households, while dual-bin systems let you separate trash and recycling.
  2. Clear Space and Remove Door. Empty the cabinet completely and remove any existing shelves. Take off the cabinet door by lifting it up and out of the hinges, or unscrew the hinges if they're the fixed type. Set the door aside in a safe place where it won't get damaged.
  3. Secure Slides Level and True. Position the drawer slides on the inside walls of the cabinet, typically 2-3 inches from the bottom. Use the template that comes with your pull-out system to mark screw holes. Drill pilot holes and attach the slides with the provided screws. Make sure both slides are level and parallel to each other.
  4. Assemble the Frame Structure. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to assemble the metal frame that will hold your trash can. Most systems use simple brackets and screws. Attach any plastic bin holders or clips that secure the trash can to the frame. Double-check that all connections are tight.
  5. Test Frame Glide and Alignment. Slide the assembled frame onto the drawer slides. It should glide smoothly in and out. Test the motion several times and adjust if the frame binds or doesn't sit level. The frame should extend fully without falling off the slides and retract completely into the cabinet.
  6. Load and Verify Smooth Operation. Place your trash can in the frame according to the system's design. Some clip in, others rest in brackets. Pull the system out and push it back in several times while loaded to ensure smooth operation. Add some weight to simulate actual use and verify the slides can handle the load.
  7. Hang Door and Check Clearance. Put the cabinet door back on its hinges. Open and close it to make sure it clears the pull-out system when extended. If the door hits the frame, you may need to adjust the slide position or choose a more compact system. The door should operate normally when the trash can is retracted.
