How to Install a Kitchen Tile Backsplash
Tiling a backsplash is the single most effective way to modernize a kitchen without a full renovation. It turns a vulnerable, painted wall into a durable surface that handles grease and steam while anchoring the visual style of your workspace. Done well, it looks like a professional installation with perfectly straight lines and crisp corners. Success here relies almost entirely on the quality of your prep work. If the wall is wavy, the tiles will show it; if your layout isn't centered, the end result will feel off-balance. Take your time with the initial measurements and layout, because once that mortar sets, the design is permanent.
- Clean and scuff the wall. Remove outlet covers and ensure the wall is clean, dry, and free of loose paint or debris. If the wall is painted, scuff it with 80-grit sandpaper to help the thin-set bond securely.
- Center and align your grid. Find the center point of the wall and draw a vertical plumb line. Dry-lay a row of tiles along the counter to check your spacing and avoid awkward thin slivers at the corners.
- Spread mortar with precision. Mix your thin-set to a peanut butter consistency and spread it onto the wall using a notched trowel. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle to create uniform ridges that allow air to escape when you press the tile in.
- Press and space each tile. Press tiles firmly into the mortar, twisting slightly to ensure full coverage on the back. Use spacers between tiles to keep rows straight and consistent throughout the wall.
- Cut clean edges first. Use a tile saw to trim pieces for corners, around outlets, and at the edges of the run. Measure twice, mark with a wax pencil, and use a steady hand to feed the tile into the blade.
- Fill and finish the joints. Wait 24 hours for the mortar to cure, then remove all spacers. Use a rubber float to press grout into the joints at a 45-degree angle, then wipe away excess with a damp—not wet—sponge.
