How to Install a Kitchen Range Hood

Range hoods are the primary defense your kitchen has against grease, steam, and persistent odors. Installing one correctly is more than just hanging a heavy appliance; it is about ensuring your ventilation path is sealed tight so that cooking byproducts are actually exhausted outside rather than trapped behind your drywall or cabinet units. When done well, a range hood sits level, operates quietly without vibration, and creates a seamless look against your backsplash or cabinetry. The secret lies in precise measurement of your duct centerline and ensuring your electrical connection is secured within an accessible box before the unit is fully fastened in place.

  1. Mark the Perfect Centerline. Identify the center point of your stove and mark the corresponding vertical line on the wall. Measure the height requirements specified by your range hood manual to ensure the unit sits within the optimal range above the cooking surface.
  2. Kill the Power First. Turn off the circuit breaker for the kitchen. Install a non-metallic cable connector into the hood's junction box and feed your supply cable through it, securing the internal wire nuts once the unit is partially mounted.
  3. Anchor to Wall Studs. Align the included wall bracket with your centerline and height marks. Drive your screws directly into wall studs wherever possible; if studs don't align, use heavy-duty toggle bolts to secure the bracket firmly to the drywall.
  4. Seal Every Duct Joint. Attach the damper collar to the top of the hood. Feed the ducting through the wall or cabinet, ensuring the transition piece fits snugly over the collar to prevent air leaks.
  5. Secure the Hood Weight. Lift the hood onto the mounting bracket, keeping it steady while you secure the safety screws at the bottom. Once it hangs independently, finish the electrical wire connections inside the access panel.
  6. Confirm Suction Works. Attach the grease filters and the chimney covers to conceal the ductwork. Turn the power back on and test each fan speed and the light settings to confirm everything operates smoothly.
