How to Install an Over-the-Range Microwave

Microwaves are heavy, awkward, and surprisingly easy to drop if you aren't prepared for the weight. Installing one over your range is a two-person job that requires precision drilling and careful alignment to ensure it sits level and vents correctly. When done well, the microwave integrates seamlessly with your cabinetry, hiding the cord and ductwork while providing a professional, clean look. The secret lies in the template; if your measurements are off by even a fraction of an inch, the top bolts won't catch the holes in your cabinet, leading to a long, frustrating afternoon of re-drilling.

1. Clear the Space and Find Studs. Clear the range area and protect your cooktop with a heavy piece of cardboard or a moving blanket. Locate the wall studs behind the drywall to ensure the mounting bracket has structural support.
2. Secure the Wall Bracket. Tape the paper mounting template to the wall, aligning the center line with your range centerline. Drill pilot holes into the studs through the template and secure the metal mounting bracket firmly with the included lag screws.
3. Drill Cabinet Holes Precisely. Tape the top template to the underside of the upper cabinet. Drill the holes for the power cord and the two large mounting bolts exactly where the template indicates.
4. Choose Vent or Recirculate. Decide if the microwave will vent outside or recirculate air through the top filter. Adjust the internal blower motor orientation according to your choice before lifting the unit.
5. Hoist and Hook the Unit. With a partner, lift the microwave and hook the rear base onto the tabs of the wall bracket. Rotate the top of the unit toward the wall while feeding the power cord up through the cabinet hole.
6. Tighten and Level the Unit. Insert the top bolts from inside the cabinet down into the microwave housing. Tighten them firmly until the unit is pulled flush against the bottom of the cabinet.
