How to Install Soft-Close Drawer Slides
D**rawer slides** are the unsung heroes of a functional kitchen. If your current drawers slam shut or jump off their tracks, the upgrade to soft-close ball-bearing slides is one of the most rewarding improvements you can make. It stops the noise, prevents finger pinching, and gives your cabinetry a premium, furniture-grade feel that lasts for years. Achieving professional results requires patience and precision, particularly when measuring. Success isn't about rushing the job; it's about ensuring the cabinet and drawer members are perfectly parallel and set back at the exact depth required by your specific slide model. Get the alignment right once, and the mechanics will perform flawlessly every time you reach for a utensil.
- Strip Old Hardware First. Take the drawer out of the cabinet completely. Unscrew and remove the old tracks from both the interior cabinet walls and the sides of the drawer box.
- Draw Perfect Guide Lines. Determine the desired height for the slide on the cabinet wall. Use a level to draw a perfectly horizontal reference line for each side of the cabinet.
- Mount Cabinet Slides Level. Align the cabinet-side slide with your reference line. Secure it using the provided screws, ensuring the slide is set back from the face frame or front edge by the manufacturer's specified distance.
- Attach Drawer Members Square. Attach the drawer-side member to the outside of the drawer box. Ensure the bracket is flush against the bottom edge of the drawer side for maximum support.
- Engage and Listen Closely. Carefully slide the drawer into the cabinet tracks until the soft-close mechanism engages. Listen for a smooth glide and check that the face sits flush with the cabinet frame.
- Fine-Tune and Lock Down. Use the built-in adjustment screws on the slides to fine-tune the drawer height or side-to-side gap. Once aligned, tighten all remaining screws in the mounting holes.
