How to Install Towel Bars Securely into Drywall

Towel bars are notorious for ripping out of drywall within months of installation because most standard kits rely on cheap, flimsy plastic anchors that cannot handle the leverage of a heavy, wet bath towel. When the screws eventually strip the wall material, you are left with unsightly, jagged holes that are difficult to patch and even harder to anchor into again. Installing a towel bar securely requires moving beyond the stock hardware provided by the manufacturer. By choosing high-quality metal toggle bolts or threaded self-drilling anchors, you create a mechanical connection that grips the backside of the drywall rather than relying on the drywall's own structural integrity. Done correctly, your towel bar will remain rock-solid for years, even under the weight of oversized luxury towels.

  1. Mark Your Bracket Positions. Hold the mounting brackets against the wall and use a level to mark your hole positions with a pencil. Use a stud finder to verify that you aren't trying to install an anchor exactly where a wooden stud exists; if you hit a stud, use wood screws instead of anchors.
  2. Punch Pilot Holes Clean. Use a drill bit sized specifically for your chosen toggle bolt or anchor. Keep the drill perpendicular to the wall to ensure the mounting plate sits flush against the surface.
  3. Deploy Anchors Behind Drywall. For toggle bolts, fold the metal wings and push them through the hole until they snap open behind the wall. For self-drilling threaded anchors, use a screwdriver to drive them into the hole until the head is flush with the wall surface.
  4. Lock Brackets Level and Tight. Align the mounting brackets over the installed anchors and drive the machine screws through the bracket into the anchor. Tighten until snug, but avoid overtightening which can crack the drywall face.
  5. Slide Bar Over Brackets. Slide the towel bar ends over the mounting brackets. Tighten the small set screws located on the bottom of each bracket using a hex key or small flathead screwdriver.
  6. Pull Hard and Trust Nothing. Apply firm, steady pressure to the bar to test for any movement. If the bracket wiggles, remove the bar and tighten the mounting plate screws further.
