How to Install Under-Cabinet LED Strip Lights

Under-cabinet lighting transforms a dark, utilitarian kitchen into a high-end workspace by eliminating shadows on your countertops. When installed correctly, the light source should remain invisible while casting a clean, even glow directly onto your work surface. Achieving a professional finish requires more than just peeling and sticking. You need to account for power supply placement, wire concealment, and the specific angle of your cabinets to ensure the LEDs don't create distracting 'hot spots' on your backsplash. Take the time to plan your runs, and the result will look like a permanent, custom fixture.

  1. Map Your Light Runs First. Measure the length of each cabinet section where you plan to install the lights. Subtract two inches from each end to allow for cable connections and to ensure the strips stay hidden from view.
  2. Prime the Surface for Adhesion. Wipe the underside of the cabinets with isopropyl alcohol to remove grease and dust. A clean surface is critical for the adhesive backing to hold long-term.
  3. Connect Before You Stick. Cut the LED strips only at the designated copper pads marked with a scissor icon. Use solderless strip-to-strip connectors to link segments if you are jumping over a range or a sink.
  4. Aluminum Channels = Polished Look. For a professional look, stick your LED strips into aluminum mounting channels with diffusers. Screw or stick the channels under the front edge of the cabinet frame.
  5. Hide Your Cables Completely. Route your low-voltage wire along the back corners of the cabinets. Use small cable clips or adhesive-backed conduit to keep the wiring tight and hidden from sight.
  6. Power Up and Hide the Supply. Plug your power adapter into a nearby outlet or hardwire it into a junction box if permitted. Mount the transformer in a discrete location, such as on top of a cabinet or inside a dedicated compartment.
