How to Install Under-Cabinet LED Lighting

U-nder-cabinet lighting changes the entire personality of a kitchen, turning a workspace into a showroom while banishing the deep, annoying shadows cast by overhead fixtures. When done well, the light source itself remains invisible, leaving only a soft, functional glow that washes across your countertops and highlights your backsplash. It is the single most effective way to improve both utility and ambiance without a full renovation. This project relies on precision and cable management. Since you are dealing with low-voltage systems, the danger is minimal, but the aesthetic success depends entirely on how well you hide the wires and position the strips. Avoid the temptation to slap them right at the front edge of the cabinet; pulling the lights back toward the wall prevents unsightly glare and ensures even distribution across your prep areas.

  1. Visualize Before You Commit. Measure the underside of your cabinets and plan the path for your light strips, ensuring they stay at least two inches back from the front edge. Mark where the wires will need to pass through the cabinet frame or around the cabinet corners.
  2. Start With a Clean Slate. Wipe the bottom of the cabinets with isopropyl alcohol to remove cooking grease and dust. Adhesive backing will fail within weeks if applied to a greasy surface.
  3. Secure Every Strip Firmly. Cut the LED strips only at the designated copper-pad marks if you need shorter lengths. Peel the backing and press the strips firmly into place, starting from the corner closest to the power source.
  4. Hide the Cables Completely. Run your jumper cables between cabinet sections, tucking the wire into plastic cord channels or securing it with adhesive wire clips. Keep the cables as tight to the cabinet wall as possible to keep them hidden from sight.
  5. Power Up and Verify. Plug your power supply into the nearest outlet and connect it to the lead wire of your LED system. If you are hardwiring, ensure the circuit is off at the breaker before making connections inside a junction box.
  6. Polish Your Final Install. Cycle the lights on and off to ensure consistent brightness and connection. Use a level or straightedge to ensure the wires are pulled taut and clipped close to the cabinet underside.
