How to Maintain Your Range Hood Filters
Grease is the silent enemy of your kitchen ventilation system. A range hood works by pulling airborne oils and moisture through a filter before venting the air or recirculating it back into your space. When that filter becomes saturated, the grease has nowhere to go but onto your cabinets, your ceiling, and eventually back into the food you are trying to cook. Well-maintained filters do more than just keep your kitchen smelling fresh; they extend the lifespan of your hood's motor by reducing drag and preventing grease buildup in the internal ductwork. A clean hood is quiet, efficient, and significantly reduces the fire risk associated with accumulated combustible residue. Managing this is simple, inexpensive, and takes less time than a round of dishes.
- Know Your Filter Type. Check if your hood uses removable metal mesh panels, baffle filters, or secondary charcoal cartridges. Metal types are reusable and go in the sink or dishwasher, while charcoal filters are porous, non-washable pads meant for replacement.
- Release and Lower Safely. Most mesh or baffle filters have a spring-loaded latch or a small tab that allows them to slide out of the frame. Gently pull the tab or release the latch to drop the filter out, supporting it from below so it doesn't fall onto the cooktop.
- Soak Away the Grease. Fill your sink with boiling water and a generous amount of degreasing dish soap. Let the metal filters soak for 15 to 20 minutes to break down the hardened oil.
- Brush and Rinse Thoroughly. Use a nylon-bristled brush to gently scrub the mesh or baffles after soaking. Rinse thoroughly with hot water until the metal appears clean and no sticky residue remains.
- Ensure Complete Dryness. Prop the filters up vertically in a drying rack or lean them against a towel. Ensure they are bone-dry before reinstalling them to prevent moisture from being drawn into the motor.
- Install Fresh Carbon Filters. If your hood is ductless, remove the old charcoal filter pad and discard it. Slide or clip the new filter into the designated slots, ensuring it is flush against the metal filter.
