How to Install an In-Ground Sprinkler System

Water is the lifeblood of a healthy landscape, and carrying a hose across the lawn is a chore that gets old fast. An automated in-ground sprinkler system transforms your outdoor space from a high-maintenance burden into a self-sustaining asset. When done well, the system should be invisible, efficient, and calibrated to provide exactly the right amount of hydration for every corner of your yard. Installing this system requires more planning than muscle. You are essentially building a pressurized plumbing network that must withstand the elements and seasonal temperature changes. By carefully mapping your spray patterns and ensuring leak-free connections, you ensure a green lawn for years without ever needing to drag a heavy hose through the mud again.

  1. Map Your Perfect Coverage. Draw your property to scale on graph paper, noting sunny and shady spots. Group sprinkler heads by lawn type and sun exposure so you don't overwater the shade while underwatering the sun-drenched patches.
  2. Cut the Underground Network. Mark your pipe paths with landscaping flags. Rent a trencher to cut narrow channels 8 to 12 inches deep throughout your lawn, keeping the removed sod aside to patch over later.
  3. Build Your Control Center. Locate your valve box near the main water source. Connect the irrigation valves to the PVC supply line, ensuring each zone has its own dedicated control valve.
  4. Seal Every Joint Tight. Lay your PVC pipe into the trenches and connect the sections using primer and PVC cement. Work methodically from the manifold outward to each zone.
  5. Position Heads for Perfect Spray. Install the risers at each marked location along the pipes using threaded T-fittings. Ensure the top of each sprinkler head sits level with the ground surface.
  6. Verify Zero Leaks, Full Coverage. Before attaching the nozzles, turn on the water to flush dirt and debris out of the pipes. Once clear, install the nozzles and run a full cycle to check for leaks and spray alignment.
