How to Conceal TV Cables Behind Drywall

Cables dangling beneath a wall-mounted television are the quickest way to ruin the aesthetic of an otherwise clean living space. While it is tempting to simply shove thick power cords through a hole in the wall, building codes generally prohibit running standard power cables inside wall cavities due to fire hazards. 'Done well' means using a dedicated cable management kit that includes fire-rated plastic grommets and allows for a clean, code-compliant finish. This project creates a professional 'floating' look for your media setup, hides the visual clutter, and protects your cords from accidental strain or physical damage.

  1. Map Your Cable Route. Use a stud finder to identify the vertical studs in the area where you intend to mount the TV. Ensure your cable drop location falls between two studs to avoid structural obstructions.
  2. Slice First Opening Clean. Hold your template against the wall behind the TV mount and trace the outline. Use a drywall saw to carefully cut through the gypsum, ensuring you do not nick any hidden electrical wires.
  3. Complete the Second Opening. Measure the distance from the floor to locate your bottom outlet position, ensuring it aligns vertically with the top hole. Trace the template and cut the opening using the drywall saw.
  4. Guide Cables Through Wall. Feed your HDMI and low-voltage cords from the top hole down to the bottom hole. Use a fiberglass fish tape if you encounter resistance or need to guide the cable around obstacles.
  5. Seal With Professional Grommets. Insert the cable management grommets into both the top and bottom holes. Secure them by tightening the integrated wings or screws until the flange sits flush against the drywall.
  6. Test and Clean Finish. Pass your HDMI cables through the grommets and plug your devices into the TV and your media console. Pull the slack taut to ensure the wall looks clean and organized.
